The shutdown, which began late last year with Vodafone, is continuing with Telstra in late August and Optus in September. As of now, Australia’s 3G networks are shutting down in stages. Vodafone was the first company to switch off its network, shutting it down between December 2023 and January 2024. Telstra and Optus have announced an extension to October for the 3G shutdown.
The transition away from 3G affects a significant number of devices. An estimate in 2023 put the number of 3G-reliant devices in Australia at about 3 million, including phones, EFTPOS machines, cars, tablets, and security cameras. These devices will no longer function after the 3G shutdown.
Additionally, the Australian government noted that approximately 740,000 4G phones would be unable to call emergency services as they rely on the 3G network for such calls. Efforts from Telstra and Optus have reduced this number, but up to 150,000 devices on the Optus network could still be affected by the time of the shutdown.
Telstra has committed to providing 4G coverage in all 3G areas before the shutdown, ensuring that mobile coverage is maintained. However, concerns remain about coverage in regional areas that do not yet have access to 4G or 5G.
