Do Electricians Install Antennas?

Not all electricians are trained to perform antenna installations or repairs, because installations require knowledge and experience in data and coax cabling, which most electricians are not qualified to do. An electricians licence does not cover any jobs related to antennas, telephones, security, or network cabling.

Antenna installations are a highly specialised task and with a lack of experience, there is a high risk of danger due to the hazardous nature of the job. TV antenna professionals are trained in rooftop safety and prepared for all weather conditions.

Most electricians will also not have the correct tools or equipment to deal with specific antenna and AV issues and installation, thus posing the risk of leaving your infrastructure worse off due to issues such as poorly terminated connections or splitters. TV Antenna specialists should possess these tools: F-type compression tools, RG6 and RG11 stripper tools, and other standard equipment to complete the installation.

Additionally, the AV and antenna cabling registration falls under the telecommunications licensing act, whereas electrician qualifications do not. It is important to note that having an open cabling registration does not necessarily mean that the electrician has the additional endorsements such as structured cabling, coax, fibre, and others. Therefore, ask your antenna technician if they are a registered cabler.

Whilst it is not essential for antenna specialists to have any formal qualifications, at Jim’s Antennas, our franchisees undergo our training program before they start working. This includes a 3-day business training course and industry-specific training, ensuring that they are experts in the field and properly qualified to fulfil their jobs.

Not only are our technicians qualified to perform antenna installation and repairs, but they are trained to do various other jobs, including:

  • TV wall mounting
  • Phone and NBN Modem relocation
  • Home Theatre installations
  • Security Alarms and CCTV systems
  • WiFi, Internet & data points
  • Fixed Wireless 4G/5G Internet Connection
