Why is my Internet so slow??

Why is my Internet playing up and how can I troubleshoot a solution?

With so many Australian’s currently working from home and schooling from home the internet has become one of the most important things in the Australian Household. Whether you’re accessing your Internet through the NBN, ADSL or Cable there are many things that can affect internet speed within the home and from outside influences.

The first thing to look at is how you are connected to the internet (what technology). There are many different ways you can connect to the internet, from ADSL to Fibre through the NBN.

If your internet is slow it’s important to figure out whether the cause is your internet supplier (which can also be caused by congestion on the network) or if it’s limited to within your property.

To try to ascertain whether your internet is slow due to congestion, your RSP (Retail Service Provider) or if it’s your individual set up, you’ll need to perform a series of tests to determine the issue.

First you’ll need to run an internet speed test.

How to test your internet speed? You can test your internet speeds by using any number of speed test web sites. Fast.com and speedtest.net are recommended ones. These will show you the download, upload and latency of your internet connection. It is recommended that you do a speed test on multiple devices independently. If you do two speed tests on two devices at the same time sometime results will vary.

We strongly suggest running both tests direct from your modem, and then on your associated hard wired points / outlets. You will also need to perform these tests on your WiFi enabled devices throughout the home.

If the test at the modem is much quicker than the hard wired points / outlets then this would suggest an issue with the data cabling running to those points / outlets.

When testing your WiFi signal, it’s a great idea to try from different rooms and locations in and around the property where you require a WiFi signal.

Not every modem/router is created equal. Some do not have the same range over WiFi that others do.  A good wireless router will cover a 4 bedroom house with no problem if it is placed in the centre of the house. If it’s in the front of the house it may struggle to reach the back of the house and an extended or more powerful router may be required.

If your WiFi signal is poor in one or more locations then you can look at improving this signal in your required areas by installing a Wireless Access Point. There a lot of brands currently on the market and a lot of these are available through retail outlets such as JB Hi Fi and Officeworks. We suggest you do research as you do get what you pay for.

If your Internet speed is slow at the modem it’s possible that you are connected to a poor internet plan. In this case it would pay to shop around and see what other options there are available.

If your internet speed direct from your modem is slow your first port of call is to contact your retail service provider (RSP). They will firstly assist you with diagnosing whether there is an issue with your internet connection and possibly offer a solution.

If your RSP advises that the speed coming into the home is much faster than what you are receiving at the modem, there maybe an internal issue with the cabling and therefore may need assessing by one our licensed technicians to diagnose the issue.
