Why Get Someone to install My TV Antenna?
You may ask, “Why get someone to install my TV Antenna when I can get one from my local Hardware store and put it up myself”. This is a good question, and one we at Jims Antennas get frequently asked. The answer to this is varied, but to simplify this I will point out a few basic tips.
1/ When we put a Digital TV Antenna on the roof, the first thing we do is a complete survey with a new antenna to locate the best position. This is very important as location of the Antenna is a key consideration. Depending on where your site is situated will affect the Digital TV signal that comes through to your antenna. If you have issues with trees or Neighbouring Buildings, these can block signal path. We can find the best path for you to optimise your signal. This is done with a Field Strength Meter connected to a Survey Antenna. This is an important piece of equipment as it not only tells us what the signal strength is, but it also indicates the BER, the quality and flow of the digital Data, and the MER, which is the quality of the signal. These all go together to give us optimum Digital Signal.
2/ Type of bracket and masting is next considered as this will determine the height an Antenna must be off the roof, and the style of antenna that is best suited to your location. The type of bracket can also differ depending on what type of roof you have (ie: tile, colourbond, tin etc), and what type of fixing is needed.
3/ The type of Digital TV Antenna is an important consideration. If you are in a capital City and looking directly at the Transmitters, the Antenna only needs to be a small gain Antenna, but if you are in the outer reaches of the City, you will need a bigger Antenna with a higher gain. Your site location will also affect the decision on what type we use. If you have a clear line of sight to the Transmitter, you most likely need a Yagi style Antenna, but if you are in a Hilly Treed area, you may need a Phased Array, or Log periodic style of antenna. In some areas of Australia, you will have a VHF (very High Frequency) signal, where others you will have a UHF (Ultra High Frequency) signal. In extreme locations, also known as black spots you may need a Satellite. These all need to be considered in the selection process.
4/ Type of Coax cable used is also a major consideration. Cabling can make or break a reception job. There are different types of cable that we find every day in existing premises, and for sale at different retail establishment. The key to a good cable is if it is a Digital Compliant Cable. Different Cable will also respond differently to signal depending on the Frequency you are using to receive your Digital TV. The higher the frequency, the more the losses on the cable. The longer the run the more the losses. Is the cable air core, Duo Shield, Tri Shield or Quad Shield? Is it RG59, RG6 or RG11? These are all questions that need to be answered so the correct cable can be used, which will reduce signal loss and therefore your tv reception problems.
