Australia is switching over to digital TV. In order to continue enjoying freeview channels, certain households in suburban metropolitan areas, remote and regional Australia will have to shift to the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) technology. This direct-to-home, digital satellite TV service allows viewers to enjoy the same channels their metropolitan counterparts receive.

The government is also doing its bit to assist eligible viewers make the transition to digital television by providing financial and technical assistance. The Satellite Subsidy Scheme (SSS) is one such endeavour. Go to the Federal Government website and check whether the scheme covers your area.

Are you eligible for the subsidy?

  • only households that rely on analog self-help TV towers exempted from the digital switchover are eligible for the subsidy
  • an applicant must be 18 years or above and a permanent Australian resident
  • he / she has to be the tenant, landlord or owner of the domicile where equipment installation needs to be carried out
  • the domicile where the equipment needs to be installed has to be residential in nature, with a distinct address; the subsidy doesn’t extend to commercial dwellings

How can you apply?

  • In order to apply, check your eligibility first. Visit the Federal Government website where you can also apply online or call the Digital Ready Information Line at 1800 201 013.
  • After applying, you will receive a call / letter from a government-engaged service contractor outlining the installation details
  • As per arrangements, the contractor will start installing the VAST equipment. Once the process is completed, you will need to pay the contractor. This is referred to as the “household contribution amount” and varies between $200- $250, based on where you reside.
